It’s Not Always About the Product…
It’s Not Always About The Product…what really affects your curl results
Have you ever used a product that seemed to work beautifully one day…only to get completely different results the next?
It’s easy to assume the product is the problem.
But when it comes to curls, the product is only one piece of the puzzle.
The way your curls look and feel can be influenced by several things happening throughout your routine ~ from the condition of your hair to how much water is left in it, how you apply your products, how you style, and even how your haircut works with your natural curl pattern.
1. Start with the condition of the hair
Products can’t completely compensate for hair that needs something different.
If your curls are dry, overly coated, lacking definition, or simply not behaving the way they normally do, adding another styling product isn’t necessarily the answer.
Sometimes your hair needs to be cleansed.
Sometimes it needs hydration.
Sometimes it needs deep conditioning.
And sometimes it simply needs a different approach to styling.
2. Water matters more than you might think
Curls form in the presence of water.
The amount of water in your hair when you’re applying your styling products can affect how easily your curls clump, how much definition you get, and how your finished style feels.
This is one reason two people can use the exact same products and get completely different results.
3. How you apply the product matters
More product doesn’t automatically mean more definition.
How you distribute it through the hair can make a significant difference.
Are you applying it evenly?
Are your curls properly saturated?
Are you encouraging your natural curl pattern or disrupting it?
The goal isn’t simply to get product onto your hair.
It’s to get the product where it needs to go.
4. Your haircut matters, too
This is something I see often behind the chair.
A styling product can only do so much if the shape of the haircut isn’t working with the way your curls naturally fall. Or, if you have an excessive amount of dead ends.
The right cut can help your curls move, create balance, and make styling feel much more intentional.
That’s why I don’t look at your curls as just a pattern to be styled.
I’m looking at the whole picture.
Your hair’s condition.
Your curl movement.
Your shape.
Your routine.
And what you’re trying to achieve.
So before you buy another product…
Take a step back and ask:
What is my hair actually asking for?
Sometimes the answer is a different product.
But sometimes it’s more water, better application, a reset, a different styling technique ~ or even a haircut that’s better suited to your curls.
Your curls don’t necessarily need more.
They need what they need.
And learning that difference can completely change the way you care for them.
